Installing Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron Mini 10 (1012) Netbook

Installing Ubuntu 11.04 on a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 1012.

No problems with this install:

• Wireless works, using the proprietary driver.  Check my other blog on how to install the b43 driver
• Bluetooth is good
• Ethernet works
• No problems with special keys on the keyboard
• Webcam works good with Cheese
• TV tuner is good, firmware required, see other blog for instructions

[Solved] Installing aircrack-ng on Dell Inspiron Mini 10 (1012) Netbook b43

Fuck Broadcom propriety shit!

Scenario:
aircrack-ng wont work out the box on a stock ubuntu 11.04 install, that is because it is using the wl driver.

1. Install aircrack-ng suite
2. Disable wl driver
3. Remove bcmwl
4. Install compat-wireles & patches.

Checkout and compile the latest svn of aircrack-ng
sudo apt-get install svn
svn co http://trac.aircrack-ng.org/svn/trunk/ aircrack-ng

sudo apt-get install iw

Check wl is blacklisted
cd /etc/modprobe.d
cat * | grep wl

Enter synaptic, Completly remove bcmwl
You may notice nm-applet is saying "firmware no loaded" if you try to connect with wireless - good

I followed instructions on the aircrack-ng site to install compat-wireless and patch for aircrack, then install Broadcom firmware BS!

check it! (assume your wlan is wlan0)
sudo airmon-ng start wlan0
sudo aireplay-ng -9 mon0

Now make it work properly on boot (important).

To make ssb not load you have to blacklist it, reboot and execute

sudo update-initramfs -k all -u

If you fail to do this, ssb is loaded before b43 and it will cause error sand the b43 module will fail to load correctly.  Lots of ssb and b43 errors in your dmesg.

Remember to unblacklist ssb after the update-initramfs.

If you still have this problem, I suggest that you make a script in your init.d

How to Dell TV tuner Ununtu Linux for Inspiron Mini 10 (1012) Netbook

This is groin grabbingly simple to get going....

Check if you have the same hardware by doing a lsusb, you should see something like this.
2040:2011 Hauppauge WinTV MiniCard [Dell Digital TV Receiver]

Install the firmware onto your system.
wget http://steventoth.net/linux/sms1xxx/sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-02.fw
cp sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-02.fw /lib/firmware/.

Open synaptic and install metv.

Reboot, check your dmesg to see if the firmware is loaded.

If it checks out ok the you can open metv and strart the tuning wizard.  Use an outdoor antenna, the little one supplied is crap.

Disable the Libreoffice Spash Screen for good!

LibreOffice is the best, heaps better than paying for crappy Microsoft Products, but the splash screen gets in the way when it loads.

There are a few ways to defeat this, one involves having LibreOffice quickstarter running on startup. No, sorry that would be a unnecessary memory hog and something I would expect from a M$ product.

Here is the best way to prevent the splash from being visible.

In Linux, sudo gedit the file /etc/libreoffice/sofficerc

and change Logo=1 to Logo=0
Save the file.

Easy way! Ubuntu 11.04 Samba File Sharing with Windows Machines

Why is it a PITA to share files with other Windows machines.  If you want to share files and folders to other computers just follow these simple tips.

• Don't edit the /etc/samba/smb.conf file directly.
• Don't use the Gnome / Nautilus sharing options menu (right click on a folder...)
• Do only the following below.

Open Ubuntu Software Center and search for samba.

Ensure that SMB/CIFS file, print, and login server for UNIX is installed.
Ensure that Samba is installed.

Once that is done, click System->Administration->Samba to open up the Samba Server Configuration.

In the Samba Server Configuration, click Preferences->Server Settings.
Edit the settings for the Basic tab to change the Workgroup name if you like.  Personally I left it as workgroup.

Edit the settings for the Security tab.  Note you must use your user name for the guest account not 'nobody'.  If you fail to do this the linux file permissions will override the samba file permissions and no sharing will happen!

Now you have a samba setup where anyone on the LAN can access your shared files without asking for username or password, aka. guest account.

Now create a samba share by clicking the Plus symbol on the Samba Server Configuration and browsing to the folder you want to share.

Check to see that you are sharing on your Windows machines!

Mouse support for mythTv possible with this easy hack!

MythTV was great, but it lacked built-in mouse support, I could move the mouse on the screen, but could not click nothing.  Checking the forums, it seems that the community has a backwards obsession in using only the keyboard for myth.

What I wanted is to use the scroll wheel on my cordless mouse to scroll through channels while watching tv and use the left mouse click to select the channel in the osd.  Which left me no choice but to use another program to emulate the keyboard with the mouse.
Simply what it does is make the left mouse button press space and the right mouse button press escape.

I did the following on Ubuntu 10.04 and myth v0.24, with no problems.

nano ~/.xbindkeysrc

add this to the file

quit and save the file.

now test it, from the command line 'xbindkeys', left click gives a space 'right click' gives escape (which does little in the shell)

now try running mythfrontend (hide mouse option must be off, you want to see the pointer)

scroll wheel to 'watch tv', press left mouse key once, while watching tv scroll channels using the wheel, select channel on the osd using the left mouse button and escape out of watching tv using the right button, simple enough. Remember left = space and right = escape

exit out of mythfrontend and kill the xbindkeys to regain control with the system

now make a script that will start xbindkeys before starting mythfrontend, and auto kill xbindkeys after exiting mythfrontend.

thats it, throw away the remote, put the keyboard under the bed, no more struggle. For all those doubters out there, you are more than welcome to go back to holding that remote in you hand, cos we know that is what you enjoy doing ;-0
